There have been some doubts whether Research in Motion(s RIMM) would even get its BlackBerry 10 platform to market after delays. But the one-time smart phone leader is following through on promises to launch BlackBerry 10 and has now announced a January 30 launch event to unveil the first two devices and more details about the platform.
As we’ve mentioned before, this is desperation time for RIM, which is quickly losing ground to Apple (s aapl) and Google (s goog) and is in danger of getting passed over by Microsoft’s Windows Phone (s msft). RIM needs to field a winner and reverse its sales declines. IDC reported last month that RIM shipped 7.7 million units in the third quarter, down 34.7 percent from the year ago quarter.
